NYC:Queens hoods-East Elmhurst

Heading eastward brings into the hood known as East Elmhurst. It goes from Norther Blvd (NY 25A) to Bowery Bay between the BQE (I-278) and Flushing Bay. This hood is mostly residential, though there are some commercial areas. Originally it was known as Trainsmeadow, though this was before any trains. William Steinway wanted to make this area a resort and he created North Beach abd even gave it trolley lines. It was part of his idea to create a town of his own. Unfortunately, his ideas died along with him when he died in the 1890's. In 1905, realtors decided to place plots of houses. It took on the name East Elmhurst and even featured having streets being named in alphabetical order. In 1939, Fiorello LaGuardia, the may of NYC at the time, felt that Floyd Bennett Field was too small for being a major airport, so he decided to place one on North Beach. It was later on named after him in his honor. The Grand Central Pkwy was built not too long after to allow for faster vehicular access there. In the post war era, a number of hotels companies decided to build there hotels across on Ditmars Blvd. The rest of the area remains a quiet despite the planes. Malcom X was known for living here at one point. You can get by taking the Q19, Q19B, Q33, Q47 Q48, Q66, Q72, and M60 buses. here is what you will find in East Elmhurst.
