I urge you to do so before viewing this thread.
My vacation in China part 1
My vacation in China part 2
My vacation in China part 3
I would like to mention that I stayed in Kunming for only 2 days, I appologize for not doing
an adequate job of representing this fine city. These are the only photos I had taken of the
city and surrounding area, I wish I had taken more. Aside from that, sit back with a cold one
and enjoy!
Me and my brother went on the train that went from Chongqing to Kunming.
The following photos were taken on the train going towards Kunming.
1.
A traditional Chinese bridge.

3.
4.
I believe this was taken at a rural train station - one of the many 5 minute
stops along the way.
As the train kept moving I looked out the window and saw a large cloud up ahead.
On further observation I noticed that the cloud kept moving closer and it looked like
something from an industrial smoke stack.
Then I saw a dark spot at the base of the cloud.....
. . . .
. .
huh?
It can't be....
.
Oh my god.
OH MY GOD!
5.
My brother kept staring at me as if I was some crazy idiot as I prepared the camera,
with my trembling hands and took a picture of the steam locomotive passing by.
The train was hauling a bunch of coal cars full of coal. I proudly declared to everyone around
me that seeing this train had made my day.
Before going on my vacation I read in a book called "The Iron Rooster" written in 1986.
(I encourage anyone going to China to read it) The book told me that China was the last
country in the world that manufactures steam locomotives. At the time the Chinese
government had a plan to remove all steam locomotives from its rails by 2000. It looks like
the plan didn't go the way they wanted it to but I'm pretty sure that they stoped making
locomotives by 2000. Which means that this paticular locomotive may be less than
30 years old!

I'm happy!

After 21 hours on the train we were in Kunming. Kumming is a nice city with spring like
weather all year round. Hence why Kunming is called the city of eternal spring. When we got
out of the train station a tout (salesman) came up to us and showed some photos of their
brand new hostel, so we went there. Like the tout said, everything was brand new and we
had the luck of being the first ones to use it, the hostel had washing machines to wash our
clothes, internet access, and decent washrooms.
The bill per night was only $15cdn cheap!!!
7.
My brother and I met up with this girl who my brother met at Hainan Dao a couple
of months ago. She did a great job in showing us the city, thanks!
Here are some photos of the city.
8.
9.
Yunan Provincial Museum - notice the star on top of the steeple.
10.
The old buildings behind me are becoming very rare.
11.
I found this building very unique it curved around some sort of park.
12.
Same intersection, other side.
13.
People were selling pets at the same spot where I took the last 2 photos.
14.
15.
A park.
16.
17.
18.
In the same park we found a large groupe of people making music and dancing,
it didn't look like they were doing for any specific reason than just to have fun.
19.
The people wanted us to go in the circle and dance with them but we kindly refused,
I was worried that we would have a hard time stopping if we did!
20.
Later on that night we went out to a pub, we played Pool and talked to a couple of english
teachers from the US. Sorry for the quality of the photo but it goes to show how Vegas-like
Chinese cities are.
The next day we decided to see a temple on the edge of a mountain overlooking the lake.
21.
My first attempt at capturing the Kunming skyline as I was on the bus
heading towards the mountain.
22.
When we got to the base of the mountain we hopped onto a chair lift that took us to the top
of the mountain where the temple was. This is my second attempt at capturing the skyline.
You see a little road going across the lake, we would eventualy take that road
on our way back.
23.
Hey bro! We forgot our skis!!!!
24.
My third and final attempt on Kunming's skyline.
25.
As you can see, the view is absolutely stunning.
26.
The temple.
27.
28.
Boo!
29.
Couples would get married and have their names engraved onto a lock which would stay on
the railings of the temple for eternity.
After a long climb down the mountain a man with a horse drawn buggy offered us a ride
accross the lake.

Before leaving to continue on our way to Sanya I asked the tout (red jacket) and hostel
owner (yellow jacket) to join me for a group shot in front of the "revolutionary" mural that is
located in the hostel's pub. The owner of the hostel made the mural, he told us that the guy
with the green shirt is him. The guy in the back of the mural is carying a lonley planet
www.lonelyplanet.com - the same book I used to help me through my travels but I
advise you to take any information from this book with a grain of salt.
36.
Me and my brother noticed this on our way to the train station.
You think this is it?
Nope!
There is more and it gets better!
Stay tuned.>
