Celebrating the Founding of the City 1639
August 22, 1639
It was on this day, in that year, that a sliver of land, where the Fort St. George and the State Secretariat now exist in Madras - now called Chennai, was sold to the East India Company. The deal was struck by Francis Day, his 'dubash' Beri Thimmappa, and their superior, Andrew Cogan, with the locals. It is believed that this deal was made on this day and these three men are considered to be the founders of this city.
The city has been witness to many firsts in India and been home to great men, institutions and developments. And such a day should focus on the city, its history, its past and its present.
The name Madras is derived from Madraspatnam, the site chosen by the British East India Company for a permanent settlement in 1639. Another small town, Chennapatnam, lay to the south of it. In due course the two towns were merged, and the term Madras was favoured over Chennai by the British. The city was renamed Chennai 1996. The city was called Chennai in Tamil and Madras in English until 1996, making it one of the very few cities in the world with two official names.
