NYC:Queens hoods-Ozone Park

Heading south brings us into the hood known as Ozone Pk. It goes from North Conduit to Atlantic Aves between 108th St with Aqueduct Racetrack and the Brooklyn line. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was part of South Woodhaven. In 1880, it was bought by Benjamin Hitchcock and Charles Denton to be developed. They had renamed it Ozone Pk after the breezes that would come over from Jamaica Bay. In 1882, the LIRR gave its own station on Atlantic Ave that would make it part of the Atlantic Ave line. In 1892, the LIRR built another line that would lead down to the Rockaways, and it was known as the Rockaway Branch in which Ozone Pk was a major interchange between these two. In 1910, housing was given for employees of Lalance and Grosjean Tinware Company. In 1956, the subway took over the former Rockaway line after part of was burned down. In the 1970's, the Altantic Ave line no longer stopped at Ozone Pk and just went express from Jamaica to East NY. John Gotti, the don of the Gambino family mafia, was known for throwing block parties on 101st Ave with the Bergen Hunt and Fish Club to celebrate Independence Day until he was arrested. Rudy Guiliani gave himself a bad reputation when he denied permits for any further block parties. Another known mobster was Thomas DeSimone, of the Lucheese family, who lived with Theresa Ferrara, his girlfriend, but she was murdered by his family members after trying to turn him in after the Lufthansa heist in 1978. The area has recovered despite its problems. Most of the residents living here today are of the middle class. You can get here by taking the subway to 80th St-Hudson St (A), 88th St-Boyd Ave (A), Rockaway Blvd (A), 104th St-Oxford Ave (A), Aqueduct-North Conduit Ave (A). Here is what you will find in Ozone Pk.
