NYC:Brooklyn hoods-Mill Basin

Heading east brings us into the hood known as Mill Basin. It goes from Aves U to N between Ralph Ave and E 69th St. This hood is mostly residential. It was first known as Equandito, which meant Broken Lands, when the Canarsie Indians had it. In 1664, they sold it to John Tilton Jr. and Samuel Spicer as it became part of Flatlands. In 1675, it was owned by Jan Martense Schenck, who had his estate build here. In 1818, General Phillip S Brooke bought the property and lived there until 1870. After 1890, it turned industrial when Robert L Crooke built a lead-smelting plant. In 1906, the Flatbush Improvement Company had built more industrial areas. Unfortunately, they were unable to make Jamaica Bay a major shipping hub as they intented it to be. It wasn't until after WWII, that Mill Basin became residential with a number of bungalows being built. In the 1960's, the Schenck-Crooke House was demolished and moved to the Brooklyn Museum. From then to now, not much has changed. You can get here by taking the B3, B41, B47, and B100 buses. Here is what you will find in Mill Basin.
