NYC:Manhattan hoods-Gramercy

Heading westward brings us into the hood known as Gramercy. It goes from 14th to 23rd Sts between Broadway and 2nd Ave. This hood is both residential and commercial. Originally, this place was known for being in the countryside. Washington Irving was known to live here on a block that became known as Irving Place after him. As the city started to move upwards through Manhattan, it was transformed by rowhouses of Greek Revival and federal styles. In 1856, Henry Kirke Brown unvieled a park known as Union Sq, which was named after where Broadway, Bowery, 14th St, 15th St, 16th St, and 17th Sts all meet forming a union. President Theodore Roosevelt was born here, in 1858, at 28 E 20th St, which was preserved in later years. More apartments were errected as the els came along both 2nd and 3rd Aves. In 1861, Hicksites who came to live here had seperated from the Quakers to keep a more traditional version built the Friends Metting House and Seminary for their worships. In the 1880's, Gramercy Pk was founded, but it was made as a private park in which only those who lived right opposite to it were allowed to go in, and that hasn't changed since then. Around that that time, Tammany Hall was known for Boss Tweed's duty of being the mayor until he was found of corruption. The Consiladated Gas Company (now Con Edison), which stood here since 1884, decided to expand there property in 1910 and again in 1926 to work with their office space. Gramercy started to become a hotspot for the rich throughout the 1900's since then as celebrities and politicians continued to live here. Much of Gramercy is still historically preserved. However, Block Beautiful tends to very on when it was built since parts of it were built at different times. Union Sq is known for its statues of famous politicians that go from George Washington to Mahatma Gandhi. While nobody may be allowed to enter Gramercy Pk even today, you can still much of it from the gates since it's pretty small. You can get here by taking the subway to 14th St-Union Sq (4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, W), 23rd St-Broadway (N, R, W), and 23rd St-Park Ave S (6). Here is what you will find in Gramercy.
