NYC:Brooklyn hoods-Northside
Heading northward brings us into the hood known as Northside. It goes from Metropolitain Ave to N 15th St with N 12th St, Bayard St, between Humbolt St and the East River. This hood is mostly residential, though there are some commercial areas. In 1638, it was part of the Dutch West India Co when it was bought from the Native Americans. They gave the town the name Boswijck. When the British took over in 1664, it was anglified to Bushwick. In 1827, the village of Williamsburgh was incorperated. In 1840, Williamsbugh became a town of its own as it seceded from Bushwick. In 1852, Williamsburgh became a city with the northside being founded as the Second Ward. It didn't last too long as they were absorbed into the Brooklyn in 1855. Durring the 1860's this area began to industrialize along the East River. The population grew after 1903 when the Williamsburgh Br was built. This lead to building more apartments in order for the to live. Unfortunately, the Great Depression wasn't too kind to Northside as it began to loose residents and become abandoned. It wasn't until the 1970's that people began to look at this area when yuppies saw that this place was only one stop off the subway and at a cheap price. In 1987, the Brooklyn Brewery was founded and has been there since. Today, Northside does remain an area that is a part of its own, though it does get associated with Williamsburg and Greenpoint a lot. You can get here by taking the subway to Bedford Ave (L), Lormier St (L), and Grahm Ave (L). Here is what you will find in Northside.
