you last heard from me in june, when i was about to leave with my girlfriend, the indominatable mlle. laine, for europe. six weeks, seven destinations, eleven plane rides: we're back. it wasn't quite a whirlwind tour, since we had about a week to soak up each place, except for lisbon.

i am preparing ten threads that i will post in august and september. this is the fourth.

MADRID
(part one)

madrid was the most memorable city on our trip. both laine and i felt more comfortable there than in any other city, despite neither of us speaking any spanish. (luckily, i found it easy enough to pick up and was at least able to order food. it helped that most madrileños were eager to converse in spanish, whether i understood or not.) a friend who recently returned from madrid put it very simply: "if paris is effortlessly beautiful, madrid is effortlessly alive." yes, madrid is a city that sleeps -- during the afternoon. otherwise, it is one of the most convivial cities i have visited. it doesn't hurt that time spent in madrid makes you feel like a character in an almodóvar film.
