Berlin - Hong Kong Forum Trip 2006 [1]

HK Forum Trip - Stop 1 : Berlin

Fellow HK forumer InitialD18 suggested a trip to Berlin to see what the German capital is all about. We found a cheap deal for 23 pounds from London on Ryanair and set off on our discount tour.

The trip got off to a good start when the hostel turned out to be much more convenient and beautiful than we thought. It was newly renovated and was steps away from the S-bahn near the TV tower :

After a good night's rest, we got off to an early start with a walking tour of Museum Island, which is home to several beautiful structures, such as the Berlin Cathedral:

An early morning stroll around these museums and galleries :

Museum Island is located in the former East Berlin.

We randomly picked a few streets and started strolling and taking pictures.

There are a number of reconstructions in this part of town. However, most of the styles have retained the historic look, but enhanced by modern materials.

Our first impressions of Berlin were pretty good. The weather was great. It wasn't cold, and there was quite a contrast between the old and the new. What surprised me was how new so many buildings looked, yet they blended quite well with their older, more historic counterparts. More on that in the next part.
