NYC:Queens hoods-Sunnyside
Heading west brings us into the hood known as Sunnyside. It goes from Northern Blvd (NY 25A) to the LIE (I-495) between 28th/43rd Sts with Dutch Kills. This hood is mostly residential. It was settled by the Dutch durring the 1600's, but was left mostly as a farmland for the next two centuries. It got its name from the Sunnyside Roadhouse that was built in 1850. It was built along Jackson Ave (now Northern Blvd) to accommodate for those going to the Fashion Race Course out in what's now Corona. Sunnyside was built as a hamlet with a rurarl feel durring thsi time, though some farms remained as did the swamps. In 1910, Pennsylvania RR decided to build the Sunnyside Yds between Northern Blvd and Skilman Ave, which lead to the demoliton of the roadhouse. Since the land was low-lying, it was very cheap to build on. The construction of the Queensboro Br in 1909 and the extension of the subway line in 1917 lead to a massive developement that would transform it forever. Irish immigrants had dominated in the pre-war ere, but began decline in the post-war era. Around this time a number of yuppies have came over from Greenwich Village to escape their cramped quarters. Newer immigrants from Korea, Columbia, Romania, and China came, though the Irish still remained a dominate group. More recently, there have been other immigrants from Albania, Bangladesh, Aremenia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Phillpines, India, Japan, and Turkey. As a matter of fact, Sunnyside is the only place in NYC where you can say gay and lesbian marchers durring the St Patrick's Day Parade whereas just about all others forbid it. When MOMA had to close in midtown Manhattan for its expansion, its exhibits were located here. Also, LaGuardia CC is located here. Sunnyside is still affordable to live in as it was then. You can get here by taking the subway to 33rd St-Rawson St (7), 40th St-Lowery St (7), Queens Plaza (E, G, R, V), and 36th St (G, R, V). Here is what you will find in Sunnyside.
