NYC:Brooklyn hoods-Brownsville
Heading east brings us into the hood known as Brownsville. It goes from Eastern Pkwy to the NY&A Railway between Rockway Pkwy and Van Sindren Ave. This hood is mostly residential. Originally, it was mostly farmland for much of the colonial era. In 1877, the Bay Ridge Branch of the LIRR was built to allow for transportation to this area. In 1885, it was built as a community for garment workers, who were mostly Jewish. In 1916, Brownsville became home to the first birth control clinic in the US, which was owned by Margaret Sanger. The 1930's and 1940's were not to kind as many of the residents left Brownsville after being known as a slum. Durring the 1960's its population was mostly of blacks and Puerto Ricans. In 1968, the teachers in this hood were known for having strikes after the Ten Plagues of John Lindsay, who was the mayor of NYC at the time. Housing projects and community gardens were being built throughout the area. In 1997, the NY&Atlantic Railway bought the former line from the LIRR, though they did keep the one that ran on Altantic Ave. If you know anything about Mike Tyson, who was a known boxer, he was from Brownsville. You can get here by taking the subway to Sutter Ave-Rutland Rd (3), Rockway Ave (3), Junnis St (3), Atlantic Ave-Van Sindren Ave (L), Sutter Ave-Van Sindren Ave (L), Livonia Ave (L), and New Lots Ave-Van Sindren Ave (L) as well as the Atlantic Ave Branch of the LIRR to East NY. Here is what you will find in Brownsville.
