NYC:Manhattan hoods-Tudor City
Heading up brings us into the hood known as Tudor City. It goes from 40th to 43rd Sts between 2nd Ave and the East River. This hood is mostly residential. Originally this area wasn't home to much, b/c it was left as open land until the 18th century. The Murray family did set up a farm that wasn't too far, but the area itself still remained unsettled for another century. In the mid 1800's, it was known as Dutch Hill, which was a shanty town. It wasn't until the 2nd Ave El was built in the 1860's that allowed for people to come up here. In the 1870's brownstones, tennements, replaced the old houses. In the 1880's the hill became known as Corocoran's Bluff, where a gang known as the Corcoran Roosters had settled in at 317 E 42nd St. Unfortunately, that area became a slum. In the 1928, architects Fred F French and H Doulgas Ives built the complex that is here today. They named Tudor City after using a tudoristic revival. The former hill became known as Tudor City Place, and included staircases for residents to walk down to the rest of Manhattan. The apartments were mainly for those of middle income despite their looks. The entire project costed 25 million dollars. In 1988, Tudor City became landmarked as a historic district. Today, there isn't too much here, but Tudor City Pl does offer good views of both midtown Manhattan and the East River. There are shops on the ground floors of the apartments, but many of them aren't much. The resturaunt known as L'Impero, at 45 Tudor City, is the most prestigous resturaunt in this hood. The real estate is one of the most prestigous, and is listed on almost all NYC real estate sites. Some say that walking on in Tudor City is almost like getting away from the city when you are still in it. Others tend to associate it with Murray Hill, when it's actually counted by itself. While there is no actual subway here, Grand Central Terminal is only a few blocks from it on Lexington Ave, but there are buses that will stop near it. If you wish to enter Tudor City Pl by car, you can only do that at 41st St and 2nd Ave. Here is what you will find in Tudor City.
